Tattoo Stencil Size Guide

Most stencils fail not because the design is wrong but because it was printed at the wrong size. Line weight, detail, and healing all depend on it.

Quick answer: Print at the final size: finger 1–2 cm, inner wrist 4–6 cm, forearm 8–12 cm, upper arm or calf 12–18 cm, shoulder blade 15–25 cm, back 20–35 cm. Lines closer than about 0.25 mm merge as the skin heals, so designs with more than ~30 lines should be at least 8 cm wide.

Why scaling changes the design

A stencil scaled up keeps the same number of lines but spreads them apart, so the piece looks sparse. Scaled down, lines crowd together and merge into a black mass. That is why you should generate and print at the final size, not resize afterwards.

Rule of thumb: below 5 cm, cut interior lines by half. Above 20 cm, add a second outline weight so the piece does not look empty.

How to check the size before committing

  1. Print the stencil on plain paper at final size.
  2. Cut it out loosely and hold it against the placement in a mirror.
  3. Check the two ends — most size mistakes show up at the extremes.
  4. Mark the centre point on skin with a marker before transferring.

Frequently asked

What size should a tattoo stencil be?
Print at the final size on skin. A wrist piece is usually 4–6 cm, a forearm 8–12 cm, a shoulder blade 15–25 cm. Scaling after printing changes line weight.
Should I print A4 or Letter?
Match the paper you actually have loaded. A4 and Letter differ by about 6 mm in width, which stretches the design slightly if you print A4 artwork on Letter.
How do I make a stencil bigger without losing quality?
Regenerate or re-export at the larger size rather than upscaling a small print. Upscaling softens edges and thickens lines unevenly.
